Stay Engaged and Ready to Act
CPF is proud to share that AB 1383 (McKinnor) continues to progress through the state legislative process and has passed the Senate Labor, Public Employment, and Retirement Committee by a 5-0 vote. This is a tremendous achievement, and we are humbled and grateful for the passion and hard work of every member who has stepped up to support this issue.
We are currently awaiting a hearing date for the Senate Appropriations Committee.
It is important to note that while there will be a brief pause until the next legislative action is taken, but our work will not stop. CPF will be strongly advocating for AB 1383 in the Senate, and as the hearing draws closer, we will send information on how to get involved and show your support.

Every step forward on AB 1383 so far has shown what the fire service can accomplish when we stand together and speak with a united voice. Ensuring a strong, secure pension for every firefighter is our highest priority, and we will continue to fight for you until this bill becomes law.
WHY AB 1383 IS IMPORTANT
Being a firefighter means bearing health and safety risks that do not exist in other occupations. While we have always known about the physical dangers that exist in our unique workplace, we have recently discovered increased exposures on the job to cancer-causing pollutants that pose long-term risks to our health. Cancer is now the leading cause of death among firefighters in America. The longer we firefighters are on the job, the higher the risk we take of job-related injury or death.
That’s why we must fight to reform our retirement system in California so that we can retire safely. CPF is currently advocating for AB 1383, which lowers the retirement age for public safety officers from 57 to 55, addresses compensation limits, and ensures firefighters have security after their service.
THE FACTS MATTER
Let’s be clear: The attacks on AB 1383 are built on misinformation. Nothing in AB 1383 changes the 50/50 cost share. Nothing is retroactive. And nothing happens outside the standard collective bargaining process. The facts matter.

POLICE1: California bill would lower retirement age for police officers, firefighters
“Retirement reform will mean more years with my family and less impact to my health. Being able to retire before the age of 57 would allow me to stay healthier and avoid burnout and work fatigue. The reduction is years with lack of sleep and increased stress will have a direct reflection on my health and longevity.”
