About Us

Our Mission

The Membership Activism Committee of the California Professional Firefighters exists to engage members in grassroots organizing efforts that protect against threats posed by anti-union groups and advance public policies aimed at improving the lives of firefighters and their families.

In recent years, our unions have come under attack by both outside anti-firefighter groups seeking to limit our rights to have a voice in the workplace and anti-union sentiment within our own ranks. This committee was born out of the idea that only firefighters can be trusted to look out for firefighters. Now, more than ever, we need you to help us protect your rights on the job, advance workplace protections, improve wages, and ensure we have access to benefits that allow us to safely retire after our service.

CPF has always fought to protect firefighters’ rights, improve working conditions, and influence policies that impact our workplace.

Understanding our history and how we got here prepares us for the challenges ahead.

History & Origins of the
Membership Activism Committee

The Membership Activism Committee was created by members of the California Professional Firefighters to protect our right to have a voice on the job in the face of attacks by anti-union groups. The activities of the committee are dictated by Policy Statement 19 of the CPF Constitution and By-Laws, which tasks the committee with:

  • Developing a grassroots organizing program for CPF Locals to inform and motivate members about our constant struggle for survival against anti-union attacks.

  • Coordinate volunteers to advance legislative priorities that protect against anti-union attacks and improve the lives of firefighters and their families.

  • Monitor the work of anti-union groups and assist CPF locals in preserving their membership.

The Committee is made up of one affiliate member from each CPF District to further the goals of Policy Statement 19. The committee directs CPF staff and makes recommendations to the CPF Executive Board on training and education programs to assist locals in strengthening their union through grassroots membership engagement. Committee members also serve as a resource in their respective districts to provide coaching and assistance to locals facing challenges due to inactivity, generational differences, and engagement.
